It was lunch time at the Butterfly household. But Flutterfly was playing with the food in her plate. She was more interested in making Carle, her baby brother eat his veggies.
Mummy wasn’t pleased. “I see you haven’t finished your meal yet, Flutterfly?”
Flutterfly made a face at the food.” I don’t like it, Mummy,” said Flutterfly as she fed him.
“You are more interested in feeding Carle than eating your veggies!!” Said Mummy.
“Yes, I just love looking after him, Mummy,” said Flutterfly.
Mummy was silent as she thought for a while. Then she said slowly. “I have been thinking of doing a bit of gardening. Will you help me, Flutterfly?
“Sure Mummy,” said Flutterfly.
So in the evening, Mummy, Flutterfly, Kathy and Carle wore their wellies and went out into the garden. They carried their gardening tools from the garden shed. Mummy had some lettuce, carrot, beans and radish seeds. The little buggies helped Mummy plant them in neat rows in the corner of the garden. Even Carle helped by digging with his small shovel!
“That was fun”, said Flutterfly as she washed her hands after their gardening was over. “Will they come out tomorrow, Mummy?”
“Not tomorrow,” laughed Mummy. “But pretty soon if you look after them well. Why don’t you go water them every day?
“Alright, Mummy I would love to,” said Flutterfly.
Flutterfly kept her word. Every day she would go out to see how the little seeds had grown. After a few days, when a tiny green appeared above the ground Flutterfly was so excited she ran to her Mummy crying, “My plant is born, my plant is born!!”
Mummy laughed. “You mean a tiny shoot has appeared?! Wait and watch. It will grow taller day by day.”
So Flutterfly waited. The very next day a tiny leaf appeared. Then, the next day another one. And another and another! It grew bigger too. Soon the vegetable garden was full of carrots, lettuce, radish and beans. And the day soon came when they were ready to be picked. Flutterfly picked them carefully, just as her mother had showed her. Then Mummy and she together prepared the dinner that night. They made buttered beans, lettuce casserole and baked carrots. She even helped mummy set the dinner table!
When Daddy came down for his dinner, Flutterfly proudly told him all about it. Daddy tasted the vegetables and said it was the yummiest dinner he had ever had! Flutterfly was so happy and proud! She tried the food in her plate. It was delicious. She took another bite, then another and soon it was all over!
“From today, I am going to have all the vegetables from my garden every day,” she announced proudly and she did too.

Children are amazing! The minute you show them the fun side of things, they adapt to it like a duck to water. I am sure many of you parents are facing this difficulty of your children not eating vegetables. Hope this little trick of Mummy Butterfly's helps you all too! :)
